RS-485 makes possible serial wired communications over long wire runs or distance. Direct UART to UART communications will walk reliably only when the cabling between devices runs just a few feet. RS-485 interface extends this allowable length in the kilometer range! This is made possible by the differential method of signalling used by this interface, making the system resistant to outside interference, thus effectively extending range, especially at high baud rates.
